Enjoy the Quiet
“All the lands are at rest and at peace; they break into singing."
Isaiah 14:7 NIV
After every storm in life, a kind of calm descends. This happens in the most mundane ways. Maybe you've experienced it? You hear the deafening calm after the baby goes to sleep. It happens at more heartrending moments too, like when the house becomes eerily quiet after the last teenager moves out. Whatever the tsunami you've experienced . . . an illness, a heartbreak, a job loss . . . it'll be followed by a calm, an emptiness, a dead space.
Our temptation is usually to fill that space with more activity. We go looking for something . . . noise, commotion, relationships, anything to fill that void. We volunteer for one more job at church or get coffee with one more friend or take on more hours at work or start some new venture.
Don't! Be still for just a moment. Enjoy the quiet while it lasts. There's nothing wrong with that space. It's not empty. It's filled with silence. It's not wasted. It's restful. Soon enough you can add back all those good activities, if you want to.
For now, put on another pot of tea, go to your favorite chair, and just enjoy the quiet. Because even that quiet is a gift from God.
Oh, one more thing . . . If you’re a regular attender or member of the Mt. Laurel Church of God, consider reading Luke 6:27-38 to get ready to hear God’s message through Pastor Dale this coming Sunday, February 23, 2025.
